Moringa oleifera: The Anti-Inflammatory Superfood


Known for thousands of years and across dozens of cultures for its healing properties, Moringa oleifera, is now scientifically accepted as the leading superfood in natural health and wellness. Moringa oleifera is widely known for being the MOST nutritious botanical ever discovered, containing more nutrients than other “superfoods” by as much as 200 times. However, Moringa is not just a nutritious powerhouse. Moringa oleifera also contains very rare phytocompunds (molecules found in plants) that are some of the most powerful healing agents yet to be discovered. In this post I will be looking at the superfood Moringa oleifera and the power it has in helping to properly regulate the body’s inflammatory response. 

Many of the challenges we see today are rooted in inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is a physiological response to protect the body, but is usually the result of other underlying health issues. Extended exposure of inflammation can lead to greater health challenges such as autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular health challenges, and much more. Systemic inflammation is usually a result in the rise of in the expression of interleukin cytokine genes, such as: interleukin-1 bega (IL-1B) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a). These two genes, when expressed cause a systemic inflammation throughout the body increasing the expression of other inflammatory genes such as: iNOS (inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase), cyclooxygenasep-2 (COX-2) and microsomal PGE synthase-1 (mPGES-1). Most notably, in a recent report Moringa oleifera has been shown to decrease the expression of many of the inflammation genes reported above, most notably when the cells were exposed to inflammation models such as cigarette smoke and lipopolysaccharide induction.¹

Looking at the seeds of Moringa oleifera, which contain many key anti-inflammatory phytocompouds, a study administered increasing amounts of moringa oleifera seed extracts to mice that had colitis (inflammation of the bowels). In this study they found that the mice responded with decreased distal colon weight, reduced ulcer and mucosal inflammation, crypt damage and several other colitis markers. These results suggest that Moringa oleifera seeds may be an alternative in helping to ease the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).²

Additionally, urinary tract infections are usually a result of inflammation and infection. A clinical study looking at Moringa oleifra as a potential treatment for urinary tract infections showed that bark of Moringa oleifera was able to cure 66.67% of urinary tract infections over the course of three weeks. This was a 50% increase compared to the control group. These results suggest that Moringa oleifera, when taken properly can be a potential daily aid in helping of systemic and acute inflammation in the body.³
